An Audience with Ed Lyon
Dr Jenevora Williams will interview international operatic tenor and qualified therapist Ed Lyon M.A (Cantab), A.R.A.M, Dip R.A.M, DipCBH, DipSMRB
Ed Lyon is an opera singer and therapist based in Cheltenham. He studied History of Art and Architecture at St John’s College, Cambridge, before his postgraduate studies at the Royal Academy of Music and the National Opera Studio. His singing career has taken him throughout Europe, Australia, America, China and Japan, performing at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses and festivals in repertoire from all five centuries of the operatic canon.
Ed is a GHR and CNHC accredited therapist. Through his own performance journey, and concomitant mental health challenges, Ed became aware of the lack of targeted sub-clinical mental health support for performers, particularly therapies delivered by people with personal experience of the unique challenges faced by them. He uses an integrative model of therapy combining CBT, Hypnotherapy, Mindfulness and Compassion Focussed Therapy to ease the symptoms of anxiety and then address the underlying causes. Essentially this means creating a safer psychological environment in which to perform (and live), and providing a safe environment in which to investigate and challenge learned behaviours and beliefs about the self, others and the world.
Ed is a practising Buddhist, painter and gardener.
