CONVERSATIONS IN SOUND AND MOVEMENT

Reconciling Some Seemingly Unrelated Body and Voice Connections

Who is Teaching?

Robert C. Sussuma, MMus., GCFP, IATC, and AEC, is a voice educator, somatic practitioner, and existential coach who uniquely integrates vocal instruction, somatics, experiential learning, and existential inquiry. A former Early Music Countertenor (BM and MMus in Vocal Performance), Robert performed across the U.S. and Europe, specializing in Medieval and Baroque repertoire. His discovery of the Feldenkrais Method (GCFP) transformed his understanding of vocal function, forming the foundation of The Singing Self program, a comprehensive training for singers and voice teachers that bridges vocal technique, health, science, somatics, learning and existentialism (www.thesingingself.com). Robert’s latest transformative personal journey began in 2018, encompassing trauma therapy and intensive study of existentialism, attachment theory, and consciousness. These experiences not only led to profound personal and relational growth but also ignited a passion for helping others navigate their own development. As a Certified Integrated Attachment Theory Coach (IATC) and Certified Applied Existential Coach (AEC), Robert helps clients deepen their connection with themselves, their needs, and their relationships (www.thebodyofconsciousness.com). In this program, Robert will guide participants through the existential dimensions of voice work, exploring the intersection of technique, somatics, perception, integration, and meaning. Through practical tools and reflective inquiry, he invites students to unlock new possibilities for vocal and personal transformation.

What happens when Voice and Feldenkrais® collide, converse, collaborate, commingle and co-create? It’s like asking, “Where does Left end and Right begin?” Come and spend Saturday and/or Sunday with Robert Sussuma for an informed experiential exploration of some surprising body/voice connections as see just how effective this conversation in action can be for your singing, moving and thinking in new ways!

DAY ONE: A BODY/VOICE Conversation

When one’s voice and singing is the reference for whole-body movements and lessons, a very interesting thing happens… your voice and “technique” responds, changes and even spontaneously updates without any direct vocal work. For those new to the Feldenkrais approach, this can be a mysterious and profound experience. But, that’s only one side of the coin…

DAY TWO: A VOICE/BODY Conversation

When one’s whole-self sense of presence and movement is the reference for vocal sound explorations and awareness lessons, another very interesting thing happens… your whole self responds; movements change and update without direct intervention.

Looking at the Singing Self from both sides of the equation, singers on day one will see and experience why somatic work like Feldenkrais® is so powerful for our learning and development; AND movers, even Feldenkrais Practitioners without vocal experience or singing knowledge, will see how voice-focused work can change the whole system too – your contact with the floor, your sense of the skeleton, and even basic functional movements will improve in clear and beautiful ways.

So, attend day one, day two or both. It’s up to you. Whichever happens, not only will you see just how reciprocal these aspects of the whole system are, but you will see that there also exists a shared territory of exploration between the two realms (Body/Voice) that has the power to update both systems at once in surprising and “seemingly unrelated” ways! Once you know it, you can’t unknow it!
