Vocal Health Safeguarding
Making vocal health a fundamental part of student welfare, safeguarding and education.
Why institutional vocal health safeguarding matters
Students should be able to access appropriate support when they experience vocal difficulties, understand how to seek help and know that their vocal health is taken seriously.
A clear protocol helps to ensure that:
Staff are equipped to respond: Voice teachers and designated safeguarding leads have appropriate training to recognise vocal health concerns and understand the next steps,
Students know where to turn: Every student is given clear information about how to raise concerns and access support,
There is a defined pathway to specialist care: When needed, students can be directed towards appropriate practitioners or clinicians,
Responsibility is shared across the institution: Vocal health becomes an established part of student welfare, rather than something students are expected to manage alone,
Students and voice users are empowered to adopt evidence led vocal hygiene routine to proactively support their own vocal health.

For institutions committed to taking a proactive, whole-institution approach to vocal health safeguarding.
Champion institutions commit to:
- Every voice teacher is Vocal Health First Aid trained.
- Two members of staff, each with a minimum level of Vocal Health First Aid training, are named as the Vocal Health Safeguarding Leads – one Designated and one Deputy.
- There is a full designated safeguarding pathway, given to every student when they are onboarded.
- This includes the protocol for a rehabilitation pathway with a relevent clinician or practitioner.
- A free two-hour lecture from a Rehabilitation Specialist will be provided by Vocal Health Education for all staff and students each year. The charge for this will only be travel expenses for the tutor.
- Please note that we offer substantial discounts for institutions booking VHFA training for groups. Get in touch to find out more.

Institutional change starts with recognising that vocal health is an essential part of student wellbeing, professional development and sustainable performance.
Through training, clear safeguarding procedures and access to specialist support, we want to help institutions create environments where vocal health concerns can be recognised early, taken seriously and appropriately addressed.
Our ambition is simple: for vocal health to be championed with clear responsibilities and support systems in place wherever voices are being trained.
